Dissonant Waves

26.03.2025

Three shows on the radio pioneer, composer, poet and anti-fascist Ernst Schoen (1894–1960) – drawing on the book by co-presenters Sam Dolbear and Esther Leslie Dissonant Waves: Ernst Schoen and Experimental Sound in the Twentieth Century (Goldsmith Sonic Series, 2023), a project that took early form on MayDay Radio.

1.

The first of three shows explores childhood, that of Schoen and his generation, of us and of radio.

You can read the script here.

2.

Through some time and space travel, the second show explores the radio magazines of the 1920s. Join us to flick through some listings in Berlin's Staatsbibliothek.

3.

The third show explores themes of exile and estrangement through the fervid dreams of a low-level BBC employee in the immediate post-war years, with special guest Owen Hatherley, author of the recently published The Alienation Effect: How Central European Émigrés Transformed the British Twentieth Century.

Thanks to everyone at Resonance for helping us put these out: Peter, Michael, Lee, among others. Thanks also to Matilda Jones for helping us teleport to the Stabi.
